Sharpening Fundamentals
Have you ever struggled with a plane or chisel that doesn’t cut well—or cut at all? This class teaches you how to sharpen these essential tools. We will cover the basics: tool edge geometry, how to grind the shape, how to hone and polish to razor sharpness. A deeper dive will go into metallurgy, oil and waterstones and how to maintain them, and machine approaches to sharpening. Other edge tools such as turning and carving tools, knives, etc. will be mentioned; however, the focus in this class will be on fundamentals, illustrated with chisels and plane irons. This is a hands-on class. Bring a dull chisel or plane if you have one (even a damaged blade; often these can be restored). Also bring any stone(s) you already own. If you are just getting started, bring nothing! You will use our tools and materials (or team up with a classmate).
